The Monkeys Come to You

Head to the far northern edge of Punta Cana, up into the Anamuya Mountains, and you'll find a five-acre patch of tropical hillside with an unusual set of full-time residents: dozens of squirrel monkeys.

They aren't native to the Dominican Republic, but the island's warm, green climate is close enough to their real habitat that they've settled right in. And because they live out in the open here, they're completely at ease around visitors. Sit still and there's a good chance one swings down from the branches to land on your shoulder — mostly to see whether you're hiding a snack in your hand.

Here's how the visit goes:

  • 45 minutes hanging out with the monkeys, with a guide.
  • A guided hike through the sanctuary, stopping to point out medicinal plants, flowers and fruit-bearing trees.
  • A quick stop at the "Coco House," where you'll see how coconut oil is made.

All of it wrapped in big mountain views that put a lot of distance between you and the resort — this is the real Dominican countryside.

Monkeyland is a popular one, and the refuge only lets in so many visitors a day to keep the monkeys happy and healthy. Reserve ahead so you don't miss out.
