The Biggest Day the Country Has to Offer

If you can only fit in one excursion and you want to actually see the Dominican Republic — not just the beach outside your resort — this is the one. A single day on the Samaná trip strings together a mountain, a 170-foot waterfall, a country lunch and a Caribbean island. It's a long, full day. It's also the best one going.

Getting to Samaná

Samaná is a peninsula up on the northeast corner of the country, where untouched beaches meet thick mountain forest. The day opens with a scenic bus ride out of Punta Cana — about an hour, threading between the eastern mountain range and Samaná Bay — to the sleepy fishing village of Miches. From there you board a catamaran and cross the bay to the peninsula itself.

Up to the Waterfall

At the Samaná docks you swap the boat for an open-air safari truck and climb up into the lush, mountainous backcountry, right to the gateway of one of the country's most loved waterfalls. From here it's your choice: a 30-minute hike into the forest, or a 30-minute horseback ride instead. Either way the trail follows the Limón River to the spot where it pours over a mountain ridge — El Salto El Limón, a 170-foot free-fall into a green lagoon. Wade in and take your time; you won't get many chances to stand under a mountain waterfall in the middle of the Caribbean.

Lunch, Then the Island

Back on the truck, we head to a country ranch for a real Dominican lunch — fish, chicken, rice, beans, salad, fresh fruit and dessert — in a rustic setting that leaves any resort's "Dominican Menu" in the dust. Then it's onto the roomy dual-hull catamaran for the ride out to Cayo Levantado. The name means "raised cay," and that's just what it is: a little atoll ringed by powdery sand and turquoise water, with mountains standing to the north and south. Kick back, and don't leave without a local piña colada — rum, ice and juice poured straight into a hollowed-out pineapple.
